What Is An MOT? - All About MOTs...!
If you use a vehicle on the road, that vehicle must be kept in roadworthy condition - a minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standard required by law. And to check whether your vehicle is in this roadworthy condition, it must go through an annual Ministry Of Transport test - or MOT test as it is commonly known - at a VOSA compliant and approved MOT Testing Station, such as here at Auto-serve Garages in West Bromwich.
During an MOT test, without dismantling the vehicle, a VOSA nominated tester carries out a series of inspections and records the results. If the vehicle passes the MOT a VT20 pass certificate is issued. If the vehicle fails the MOT a VT30 failure document is issued (together with notes regarding the failure). Even if the vehicle passes the MOT, advisory comments may still be drawn to your attention by the tester.
Only vehicles of three years or older require an MOT test. From then on it is your responsibility to have your vehicle MOT tested each and every 12 months. And each year, when your MOT is due, your vehicle can be tested up to 28 days in advance of its due date (don't worry you won't lose any time by testing in advance of the expiry date as the expiry date of your new MOT will be dated twelve months following the expiry of your old one).
It is important to note that an MOT pass certificate does not mean a vehicle is roadworthy for the full length of time the certificate is valid. An MOT pass certificate is also no guarantee of the general mechanical condition of your vehicle, as the test does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. The test is based on the condition of the vehicle on the day.
One last thing... Remember to take your Vehicle Registration V5 Document and a means to pay with you to the MOT test.
